And
The Winners Are . . . (Continued)
Tennis is no longer just a game, it's an experience.
This year's Court-of-the-Year winners.
Club
The
Sonoran Clubhouse at Desert Mountain was constructed in 1993, offering
world-class tennis on one natural grass center court, two Fast-Dry HydroCourts
and two hard courts. The grass center court is the centerpiece of the tennis
facility, designed for three different court positions at east, west and
center to minimize court wear and maximize viewing for spectator events.
Another facet of the grass court is the design and construction of its
subsurface heating and watering system, an industry first. The heating
system consists of boilers that produce and circulate hot water through
tubes beneath the grass. This state-of-the-art system eliminates the need
to reseed the natural surface and keeps the surface warm, reducing the
court's susceptibility to the cool weather frost that often occurs at the
site 4,500 feet above sea level. And as is the case with other subsurface
irrigation systems, this system reduces water consumption and evaporation
in the hot sun of the desert.
The five courts in use were part of Phase I construction, along with
a fitness center, sauna and steam room, full kitchen, dining rooms, pro
shop, swimming pool, croquet pitch and outdoor aerobics lawn. Phase II
is scheduled to add two more hard courts and two Fast-Dry HydroCourts.
