The new surface began its development in Australia in 1985 by Dale Hansen, the target being the Australian Open surface. Attempts had been tried in the U.S. in the 1970's when the new polypropylene fiber was first developed. The first tennis surface attempt for a tennis club in California failed. At the time, no one understood the needed elements necessary to the bounce of a tennis ball and the interaction of a softer surface of a grass-like fiber.
